Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 30

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She looketh well to the ways of her household
  • She eateth not the bread of idleness
Today is Day 30 of the Clutter Busting Challenge at Money Saving Mom.  Our task, should we choose to do so--and you know you really need to--is to rid ourselves of the clutter in our houses, by turning loose of (at least) seven things every day during the month.

Today I got rid of one thing from home--a television--donated to my church to use in one of the children's rooms.  I also got rid of several things from my office at church--a wireless router/modem that's been in a desk drawer and is missing one of the cords, an old phone book, some magazines, and some construction paper scraps left from when I was teaching an adult class on how to teach children--I made the grown-ups do crafts to teach them how to teach the kids--it was priceless!

What did you get rid of today?

Until next time...

Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 29 (Hotel Toiletries)

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She looketh well to the ways of her household
  • She eateth not the bread of idleness
Today is Day 29 of the Clutter Busting Challenge at Money Saving Mom.  Our task, should we choose to do so--and you know you really need to--is to get rid ourselves of the clutter in our houses, by turning loose of (at least) seven things every day during the month of May. Big or small, trash or "treasure", give away or throw away, sell or donate, it doesn't matter, just get rid of it!

Today I'm getting rid of 27 things--hotel soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and even a mouthwash or two.  These are being donated to my church, where we're making up some personal toiletry bags to use for disaster relief or homeless ministry.

What did you get rid of today?

Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 24

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She looketh well to the ways of her household
  • She eateth not the bread of idleness
Today is Day 25 of the Clutter Busting Challenge at Money Saving Mom.

Today I cleaned out the clutter in my coupon binder.  I have no idea how many I threw away--way more than 7! I had unclipped inserts and loose coupons just stuffed in the front--obviously I haven't been using it in a while. I had a lot of expired coupons--one or two that I made a mental "ouch" that I'd missed using them, but of them will come around again.  I'd just been dreading doing it, but once I went through and threw away the expired ones, it really didn't take that long to get it back in order.  (To see more on where I get my coupons and how I organize them, see my Couponing 101 page for the basics.)

With the price of groceries and everything else these days, it's time for me to get back to my couponing, meal planning, scratch-cooking ways.

What did you get rid of?

Until next time...

Dollar Store Decorating--Thrifty Summertime Flip-Flop Wreath

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She worketh willingly with her hands
  • She maketh herself (and her home) coverings of tapestry...

    Summertime Flip-Flop Wreath

For the last couple of weeks, I've been a woman on a mission.  Several years ago, I made myself a cute spring/summer wreath using a re-purposed grapevine wreath, and some craft ribbon and frou-frou I picked up from Dollar Tree.

Not bad for $3.00 out-of-pocket, huh?

You can see the step-by-step for this one here, if you'd like to click through. I don't know what it was about this wreath, but I just loved it--the colors, the dragon-fly, and the thriftiness of if all combined to suit my fancy, and I hung it out usually from the first sign of anything resembling spring until the leaves were falling off the trees in the fall.

Unfortunately, three years of wear-and-tear, and it being left out in the sun on top of the birdbath (don't ask!) made it just a faded shadow of it's former self.

I was determined to re-do it with something similar, and went confidently off to the Dollar Tree in search of inspiration.  Unfortunately, apparently craft ribbon like I used here is not the "in" thing anymore--everything seems to be going to the big puffy deco mesh stuff, and while I think some things made with deco mesh look pretty, it just wasn't what I was looking for.

I even went to the big Dollar Tree when I went to the city for a meeting a couple of weeks ago.

Disappointment, again.  No craft ribbon, no cute wind chimes, nothing.

Think outside the box, I told myself.  Too late in the year for spring colors, anyway, what is bright and pretty and summery and cheap and can be hot glued to a wreath?  A hot pink flowered beach bag first caught my attention, but standing in the middle of the store I couldn't figure out what to do with it--and then I spotted the flip-flops hanging right beside the beach bags.

I'm not much of a flip-flop person, myself, the only time I wear them is to get a pedicure, and those occasions are very few and far between these days.  But they were bright, they were pretty, they were summery, and best of all--cheap!  Oh, and hot-glueable!  So I grabbed a pair in each color.  (I figured if I didn't use them all, I could always throw them in my give-away/donate box for the clutter-busting challenge!)

Step 1--remove the old ribbon stuff.

Step 2--remove the tags and hanging thingies from the flip-flops

Step 3--try some arrangements.  In pairs...

    ...or separate?

Step 4--Hot glue to the wreath and to each other.

Note: The bad thing about hot glue is that it's called "hot" for a reason.
The good thing about hot glue is, it dries clear, and if you need to move things, once it cools, you can usually just pop things off and peel the hot glue remnants right off.

And here is the finished product on display.  My out of pocket--$5.00 for the flip-flops

I think this would be easier with a styrofoam or straw wreath form--the hot glue did drip through the wreath a little onto my kitchen table--luckily, as I mentioned above, it peeled right off once it cooled.  You might want to do this on newspapers or something if you have a nice table that might be ruined by hot glue dripping on it.

What thrifty pretty have you bought or made for your house lately?

Until next time...

Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 23

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She looketh well to the ways of her household
  • She eateth not the bread of idleness
Today is Day 23 of the Clutter Busting Challenge at Money Saving Mom.

Today I got rid of an indoor table-top fountain thingy that I won as a door prize at a women's meeting, four little candles/candle holders, and the remains of four solar lights I used to have along my front walkway.  The fountain and candles are in the giveaway/donate box, the solar light things are in the trash.  (They were el-cheapo to start with, and when I first put them up, instead of lighting the walkway, they just sort of glowed after dark--I thought it made my house look like space ship had landed--so I'm not sorry to these go at all!)

What did you get rid of today?

Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 22

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She looketh well to the ways of her household
  • She eateth not the bread of idleness
Today is Day 22 of the Clutter Busting Challenge at Money Saving Mom.

I got rid of a TON of stuff today!

Ha!  Just kidding!

Wednesdays are my "church" days.  I do church-related visiting and errands, and spend time in my office at church, right up until service time tonight.

But I did throw away a lot of junk mail, got rid of some old clutter on the church website, weeded out and sorted some emails and photo folders, and (hopefully) talked to someone about getting rid of some clutter themselves--both internal and external.

I'm hoping that tomorrow I'll pick up speed again and "bust" some actual physical clutter, all the way through next week.

What did you get rid of today?

Until next time...

Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 20

Today is Day 20 of the Clutter Busting Challenge at Money Saving Mom.

I've been off my game a little the last few days, not too much cleaning or clutter busting getting done, but I'm trying to get back in gear.  Today I'm getting rid of some more hair accessories--some bows, scrunchies, and elastic head bands--about 23 pieces in all, if I counted correctly.

What are you getting rid of today?

Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 15--My Hardest Release Yet

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She looketh well to the ways of her household
  • She eateth not the bread of idleness
Today is Day 15 of the Clutter Busting Challenge at Money Saving Mom.

Today's clutter may look a lot like the 50 some-odd cassette tapes I got rid of a few days ago, but they tug at my heart strings just a bit more. These aren't just cassette tapes, they're soundtracks--not like movie soundtracks, but back-up music and vocals recorded to play behind a soloist.  I used to sing--sometimes at weddings and funerals, but mostly in church. Your church environ may call them "solos", in my church tradition, we call them "specials".  After the choir and the praise team does their thing, then you have a "special"--someone singing a special song as a solo, sometimes, but even groups could do "specials"--the Ladies Trio, the Men's Quartet, the Ensemble Choir, the Chorale--all could do a "special".

When I was a teenager/young adult, I was part of a little group that toured around south Louisiana and southeastern Texas as part of any little Friday night or Fifth Sunday "singing" that would invite us (that was way back in the day.) Then I was on a praise team and part of a choir, when we had one, and always, I did "specials"--first as part of a group, and later as a soloist.

These tapes represent that.

As I got a little older, and went on to do other types of ministry, I quit doing much singing, except for the very occasional "special".  Those got fewer and farther between, until now, it's been five or six years since I've done any singing to speak of, except as part of a congregation.

Once every blue moon, I dig these out, and I sit down with my old cassette boom box, and I sing, song after song, sometimes 10, 12, 15 songs at a time.  Then I pack them all back up and put them away until the next wave of singing nostalgia hits, and I do it all over again.

Most churches, including my own, don't even have a tape deck as part of their sound system anymore, so these aren't any good, even to someone who does sing. (If they do, they use CDs or mp3 files or something similar.)

I just can't bring myself to throw then into the trash.  Isn't that silly?  So--for now, these are parked next to the give away/donate box, until I can decided which way to go.

And this is the first clutter-busting that makes me a little sad.

What are you getting rid of today? Have you had any twinges about any of your clutter-busting so far?

Until next time...

Why I NEED this Clutter Busting Challenge

  •  Who can find a virtuous woman? her prices is far above rubies
  • She looketh well to the ways of her household
  • She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy

Today I had the privilege of meeting Rev. Barnabas Mtkambali, General Superintendent of the Tanzanian Assemblies of God.

Being General Superintendent means for this organization, in this country, he is The Big Dog.

As he shared with us about his country, he briefly mentioned in passing that they have over 150 different tribes there, and so have over 150 different languages spoken, although Swahili is the common language used to communicate for those from different regions and tribes.  They are also a very poor country, something the fourth from the bottom in economics among African countries.

These things were mentioned just in passing, though, as what he shared with us was their passion and vision to reach their country for Christ.  Every member is encouraged to try to win and disciple just one person per year for the Lord.  Each church is urged to plant one new church every three years, and to raise up ministers and future pastors from among their members at the rate of one a year for each congregation.  They've built boarding schools with a stream-lined curriculum for those who feel called to be church planters, with credits that can be transferred later (once they've gone into ministry and planted a church or two) when they have time to pursue additional schooling.  Everything is so well designed, and organized.  They developed this plan after a nationwide effort of praying and fasting over a three month time.

Their original Church Planting schools were thatched roof, mud brick huts.  Now they are replacing them with what Rev. Mtkambali described as "simple, adequate" buildings.

"Simple, adequate." If I was satisfied with "simple and adequate", I wouldn't need to participate in this Clutter Busting Challenge.

I want to look well to the ways of my household.  I want to look well to the ways of my ministry.  I want to be able to reach my hands to the poor and needy.

I want to be content with "simple, adequate"--everything.  Clothes, food, house, possessions.

My husband and I are givers already.  We tithe to our local church, and we give additional offerings over and above our tithe to other ministries, including various missions works.  We recently paid off the last of our debts, making it possible for him to take a local job where he gets to come home every night, vs. one where he traveled all the time, but it's at a much smaller salary.  Still, we give, and have no call to complain about what we make, or give, or have.

But I could do better.

I'm the one who looks longingly at the latest and greatest in technology, and gripe and grumble if I don't always get the things I want.  I'm the one who feels it, and sighs, when I have to "do without".

I heard a minister on the radio this week--not sure who, but a nationally known, syndicated radio program-- talk about how most of us gripe and grumble and are never satisfied, and yet we live better today than even kings did just two hundred years ago. (Maybe even less, now that I think about it.)

I'm still going to be clutter busting, and I'll be posting pictures of it again starting tomorrow.

But for today, I just felt the need to bust a little clutter out of my soul.

Until next time...

Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 13

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She looketh well to the ways of her household
  • She eateth not the bread of idleness
Today is Day 13 of the Clutter Busting Challenge at Money Saving Mom.

Today I got rid of a pack of binder dividers that I bought for my coupon binder and then didn't like, and 15 books on mothering/parenting, all from a season of life that's long past for me, but may be of use to someone else.  All of these went into the give away/donate box.

Today is Day 10 of the Clutter Busting Challenge at Money Saving Mom.

I didn't do any clutter busting for the last two days, I was trying to get rested and unpacked from our trip, caught up on laundry, and back to my regular routine.  Today I made up for it, though, I got rid of two cassette tape organizers almost full (about 50 or so) of cassette tapes, along with a few more catalogs and a pile of junk mail.

Outdoor Wednesday

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies
  • She considereth a field...with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard
My husband and I went on a quick trip to North Carolina this past week to see some of his family, and decided to take a slightly different route than the one we usually take, so we got to see a little of the Appalachian and Great Smoky Mountains.

Part of the trip was spent looking at the scenery through the windshield wipers...

or out the side window...

But some were close enough to stop and take a better look at, like this water fall, literally coming out of the rock beside the road...

or this old shed near Canton, NC...

...or this field nearby.

Some views were from a distance...

or just a little bit away.

While some were up close, and personal, like this twig porch rail...

or this bit of interest on in a yard.

Some sights were humourous...

And some were comforting---like this one of the "big bridge" crossing the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge--which meant we were getting close(er) to home!

We had a good time, saw some sights, spent time with family---and now we're safe and sound back at home, sweet home.

No clutter busting today, just resting and catching my breath, and back to my regular routine tomorrow.

Until next time...

Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 7

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She looketh well to the ways of her household
  • She eateth not the bread of idleness

Today is Day 7 of the Clutter Busting Challenge at Money Saving Mom.

Today's "clutter" is a bit of a stretch--we're still traveling, should arrive home today, but I'm not sure I'll be there early enough to gather clutter, photograph it, and get it posted, so I'm showing you the "clutter" in our truck, which will be thrown in the trash--fast food and snack trash.  They say that travel is broadening, but I don't think they mean in the way it tends to "broaden" us.  We don't eat constantly, but "frequently" is definitely an adverb I'd apply!

Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 6

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies

Big or small, trash or "treasure", give away or throw away, sell or donate, it doesn't matter, just get rid of it!

Today's clutter is a stack of 14-15 fall and Thanksgiving themed wall/window/bulletin board-type decorations.  Some of these are from when my son was young and/or when I taught Sunday School.  Since my son is a college graduate and I haven't done children's ministry in years, I think it's time to let these go--into the giveaway/donate box.

Big or small, trash or "treasure", give away or throw away, sell or donate, it doesn't matter, just get rid of it!

Today's clutter is a "leather" tote bag, four catalogs, a wireless mouse that doesn't work, and hair dryer that barely works and smells like smoke when it's turned on--that I held onto because it was my favorite and worked really well with my hair type--when it worked.  The tote is now in the give away/donate box, and the rest--already in the trash.

Fresh and Easy Strawberry Pie

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She is like the merchants' ships, she bringeth her food from afar

Did you see the post I did earlier this week about the flat of beautiful Louisiana strawberries I bought, and the adventures (and mis-adventures) I had trying to get them all taken care of in a day?

Although the two ugly pies I made tasted good, I was determined to make a better one, as I know I'm capable of doing, so I got up the next morning and made another, taking my time to be sure I got everything right this time.

Check out my post over on Secrets of a Southern Kitchen on how to make this fresh and easy strawberry pie.

Today is Day 2 of the Clutter Busting Challenge--our task, should we choose to do so--and you know you really need to--is to rid ourselves of the clutter in our houses, by turning loose of (at least) seven things every day during the month of May. Big or small, trash or "treasure", give away or throw away, sell or donate, it doesn't matter, just get rid of it!

(I cheated a bit for the posts for the next few days--we're on the road for a little mini-trip, but I didn't want to lose momentum, so I picked 7 things for each of the days we'll be gone and took the pictures all in one day!)

Today's clutter is three pairs of stretchy pajama-y pants, a basket, and three diet books.  All are going the ARC thrift store.

Clutter Busting Challenge-Day 1

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? her price is far above rubies
  • She looketh well to the ways of her household
  • She eateth not the bread of idleness

Today is Day 1 of the Clutter Busting Challenge--our task, should we choose to do so--and you know you really need to--is to rid ourselves of the clutter in our houses, by turning loose of seven things every day during the month of May. Big or small, trash or "treasure", give away or throw away, sell or donate, it doesn't matter, just get rid of it!

Today I got rid of three pairs of shoes that have barely been worn because they just don't fit right, a connectivity cord for a phone we no longer use, and three catalogs.  Catalogs go to the trash, the other things will be donated to a thrift store run by our local ARC (Association of Retard Citizens.)
