Philippians 3:14 Friday, May 29

If confession is good for the soul, then I hope a world of good comes from my confession---I've had a most un-productive week this week. I had 10 things on my list for last week, and I did two of them--one of which was to get myself a pedicure! Ever read about the "Slough of Despair" in Pilgrim's Progress? Well, I think I fell into the "Pond of Procrastination" this week. Even this post is two days late!

Part of my procrastination, I've come to realize, is dreading the whole process of some tasks so much that I end up making them much larger in my imagination thant they are in reality. On the other hand, some jobs I put off because they are actually too big for me to tackle all at one time--those I need to break down into smaller, more achievable steps. And last but not least, I procrastinate because I think too long and hard about just the "right" way to do some things--should I file alphabetically or by category? Move everything first, then go back and label and organize, or move one file at a time, labeling and purging as I go? The truth is, there is no one right way to do many things, there's only what works or doesn't work for me as an individual, or for us as a family.

And so I go back to the drawing board for this week:
  1. Work my morning routine
  2. Work my daily/weekly routine
  3. Move the files from the small filing cabinet to the big one
  4. Purge 25 books
  5. Spend 15 minutes daily cleaning and straightening in my bedroom
  6. Spend 15 minutes daily cleaning and straightening in the front bedroom
  7. Read one book just for fun

Philippians 3:14 Friday, May 22

Goals, what goals?

I clicked over on Kate's Philippians 3:14 Fridays post on Which Proverbs 14:1 Woman? to find that she's in basically the same predicament I am. I had a busy week, but failed miserably at keeping on point with several of my goals.

  • I did catch up on my couponing--clipping, sorting, filing--I was a couple of weeks behind in clipping the inserts, not to mention pulling the ones that have expired. It took several hours, spread out over an evening and the next morning. I finally gathered up the remaining coupons for things I'm not as likely to use and stuck them in some baggies which I'm going to "file" in the back pocket of my binder.
  • I did go to the Explorations of Antiquities Center in La Grange, Georgia, and took lots and lots of pictures--that deserves a post all on it's on, which I'm planning for sometime next week!
  • As the rest, well--I grocery shopped and cooked and went to church and packed to come back to Louisiana and drove the 10 hour drive and helped unload the truck and got mostly unpacked again. But the rest of the things on last week's list are, well, strangely unaccounted for.

So for the next week, I'm setting fewer goals and hopefully working harder at them:

  1. Get a pedicure. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.
  2. Clean off my dresser, including clean and straighten the drawers
  3. Clean off my chest of drawers, including the the two shelves behind the mirrored door
  4. Move my files to my new-to-me filing cabinet (Remember I mentioned in an earlier Philippians 3:14 post that I needed a larger, better grade filing cabinet? Guess what we found at a neighbor's garage sale the very next day?? A 4-drawer, business grade filing cabinet for $15! A similar size and grade with a lock (this one doesn't lock) retails for about $180. What a find!
  5. Buy and hang curtains for my son's room
  6. Buy a couple of new hair accessories for me--my barrettes and clippies are sad.
  7. Buy seeds, dirt, etc, and start some herb pots
  8. Work my morning routine
  9. Get my daily prayer-and-Bible reading back on track
  10. Fast one day

And that's it for this week.

Do you struggle with setting and meeting goals? Join Philippians 3:14 Fridays at Which Proverbs 14:1 Woman? as we offer encouragement and accountability as we "press toward the mark".

Blog Link-A-Thon

One of the things we "Bloggy" people like to do is link to other blogs, and more importantly, have other blogs link to us. I recently participated in a Blog Link-a-Thon at MomDot--a magazine style blog with multiple contributors on lots of different topics related to motherhood--from personal to practical!

As part of that Link-A-Thon, I agreed to post a list of each and every participating blog, and they have each agreed to do the same. It's a virtual web of links and cross-links! (Get it? A virtual web. You know, web. Like the world wide you-know-what--I know, I know, it's weak, isn't it? I'm pitiful, but oh-well.)

So while I just gave you a post this week with my own "Delightful Dozen" links, here are a whole bunch more for your perusal.

Looking Well to the Ways of My Household

  • She is like the merchants' ships, she bringeth her food from afar.

  • She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

  • She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
I've been working on my daily routine--those little everyday things that need to get done, regardless of what else happens to my day. I've been having lots of those "IGAD" days--I've Got All Day--where I drift through the day with good intentions but nothing actually seems to get done for one reason or the other--till suddenly it's time to start supper and I jump and start cooking and cleaning and snatching and grabbing and the next thing I know, I'm feeling tired and out-of-sorts and like I'm worked down (ha!) and yet I really haven't accomplished much of anything, other than feeding my family.

I've been doing too much "eating the bread of idleness" and not enough "looking well to the ways of my household"!

So today I had a plan. I knew there were three main tasks that I needed to accomplish:

  1. Get ready for the cleaning lady to come--I have a wonderful woman who cleans for us twice a month--she's a rare jewel, a perk that comes with the corporate apartment we live in when we're at home-away-from-home--but I have to make sure that she can actually clean the apartment and not have to deal with our personal things that are strewn around.

  2. Get the oil changed in my truck--I'm on the road again later this week, and it needs to be done before I drive that far

  3. Shop for groceries
That was me planning my work, and this is what I did to work my plan:

  1. I set my alarm clock. I didn't need to rise "while it was yet night", but I knew I needed to get up and get at it before very late. I ended up getting up before the alarm-I think the simple of act of setting the clock made a mental checklight go off that I needed to get up and get going.

  2. I got "groomed" and dressed in going-out-of-the-house clothes right away, even to make up. No sitting in jammies and housecoat half the day!

  3. Made a couple of passes around the house just picking up and putting things away--socks and shoes left beside the couch, church clothes left draped instead of hung back up, jeans in a pile waiting for the washer, books and magazines left on top of the coffee table--each thing alone doesn't seem like much, but all of it together makes for a messy overall look, and definitely gets in the way of actual cleaning.

  4. Emptied the dishwasher and dishdrainer and put clean dishes away, ready to start filling with today's dishes.

  5. Did the outside-the-house errands, including getting the oil change, shopping for groceries (see some of my bargains below, thanks to my coupons), and making a couple of other stops.

  6. Took my pictures for my blog, and put everything away immediately afterward

  7. Washed and dried a load of clothes.

  8. Was able to spend some time chatting with the wonderful lady who cleans for us, instead of running around picking up each room just ahead of her.

  9. Spent some time online, but doing some productive things, not just surfing.

  10. Had dinner with my family and a pleasant evening together just hanging out.

Nothing major, but I got three "main things" done, as well as a lot of those little ones that need to be taken care of regularly.

And to make it even sweeter, I found lots of free and frugal items today!

I did my main shopping at Walmart for this week--not always my store of choice, but they have some good roll backs going right now, as well as everyday low prices on a few items that I knew I had coupons for. This is what I found:

For free or almost free:

2 Frosted Mini Wheats, $2 each, less $1 Q (coupons) and B1G1 Q, making this $1 for 2 or $.50 each
2 Wheat Thins Artisan crackers, $2 each, less $1 Q and B1G1 Q, making this $1 for 2, or $.50 each
2 Kraft Dressing, $1.58 each, less 2 $1 Qs, making these $.58 each
2 Kraft Barbecue Sauce, $.98 each, less 2 $1 Qs, making these free
1 Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce, $2.19, less one Free Sauce Q, making this free
4 Mahatma Rice mixes, $.66 each, less 2 $.75/2 Qs making these $.29 each
1 Bounty Paper Towels, $1, less $1 Q, making this free
1 Kraft Deluxe Mac & Cheese, $1.50, less $1 Q, making this $.50
1 French's mustard, $1, less $.75 Q, making this $.25

Not free, but still frugal:

4 Crystal Light Tea, on sale for $2.98, less $1 Qs, making these $1.98 each--at this price, I can make a 2qt pitcher of Crystal Light tea for $.33
2 Crystal Light individual packets, $1.97, less $50/2, making these $1.74 each
1 Hefty Trash Bags,$3.98, less $2 Q, making this $1.98
1 White Cloud toilet paper, $2, less $.75 Q, making this $1.25, or $.31 a double roll

I did buy a few other things--peanut butter, chai latte and hot chocolate mix (an indulgence of sort for me, but still much cheaper than buying my chocolate chai lattes at the coffee shop) a package of manager's reduced chuck steak--my total OOP was $43.09, I saved $24.67 with coupons.

And so for today, I rose early (although not still night), brought my food from afar, gave meat to my household, ate not of the bread of idleness, and overall--looked well to the ways of my household!

Until next time...

Philippians 3:14 Friday, May 15

It's time for another Philippians 3:14 Friday! Putting my goals down in black and white and knowing that I'll come back to evaluate has really helped me to "press toward the goal" in several different ways.
  1. It helps keep me on point--I find that I'm easily sidetracked. I start one task, see something else that I think I need to do "right quick", and end up doing myriad small tasks without accomplishing the bigger things that sometimes need to done to completion. (I remember a scene from the old M*A*S*H series when the David Odgen Stiers' character was newly assigned to the unit--the other staff were used to doing things as quickly as possible, making do with less-than-stellar conditions, etc. The new doctor, on the other hand, came from an environment of almost painstaking perfection. At one point, as he is about to demonstrate a new procedure to them, he makes this statement "I do one thing at a time. I do it very well. And then I move on." There are some situations where that may not work or be the wisest choice, but there are times that it would benefit all of us to be a little more single minded!)
  2. It helps me to see where exactly I deviated from the plan--at one point last week I told my husband that I thought I had pulled out more stuff than I had time to put back! It does help me at times to stop and re-evaluate!
  3. It encourages me when I see the things that I actually complete

And so, without further ado, my goals for last week were in two parts, one for Home-home, one for home-away-from-home

Part 1, for Louisiana

  • Finish purging books --I more than met my goal of purging at least 25 books
  • Dust and straighten the bookcases--not to perfection, but finished, nevertheless
  • Finish my bedroom clean-up--the one thing that I totally did not do.
  • Pack for the Georgia trip--done

Part 2, for Georgia

  • Unpack--done
  • Get my daily routine going--sort of done
  • Catch up my blogging and email --done
  • Do some advance posts--working on

And now this past week will be done somewhat in reverse--our son and I will be leaving toward the end of the week to go back to smalltown (Home-home) for about two weeks. We also found out this week that we'll be leaving Georgia for good and moving back home for at least a couple of months in August. Crazy schedule, isn't it? Meanwhile, my goals for the coming week:

  1. Catch up on my couponing--clip those that need it, file them, and pull out any expired coupons
  2. Pack most of my stockpile to take back home now, rather than later
  3. Go to the Explorations in Antiquity Museum in LaGrange, Georgia (and take lots of pictures)
  4. Work on financial aid information for son's next year in college
  5. Print new business cards for ministry contacts
  6. Get at least 3 posts uploaded and pre-scheduled for A Virtuous Woman, 2 for Secrets of a Southern Kitchen

Longer term goals:

  1. Work on that 10 pounds I was going to lose in April
  2. Make outline for Bible study series on the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31
  3. Finish cleaning/organizing front bedroom at home (now that most of the pure junk is purged)
  4. Clean out my dresser and dressing table in my bedroom
  5. Look for new curtains for the kitchen--at least get a real idea of what I want, and whether I can sew them or just buy them
  6. Fast three days (three one-day fasts)
  7. Pick one Bible study course to work on this summer

Would you like more accountability and encouragement to "press toward" your goals? Join us for Philippians 3:14 Fridays at Which Proverbs 14:1 Woman?

The Clutter Monster

  • She looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness

  • ...She worketh willingly with her hands

These last few weeks at home I've been working on taming the clutter monster. It's been especially difficult because I tend to over think things. I spend too much time planning and not enough time doing. I've been working on it a little along, but as I mentioned in my Philippians 3:14 Fridays post, this last week I've been spurred on by husbands energy and encouragement. I look around and still see so much that needs to be done--I think because this time, as I tackle one layer of clutter--the surface clutter--I haven't stopped, but have begun tackling the underneath clutter--the stuff in boxes and bags and closets and drawers. So when I'm tempted to get discouraged by all that's still left to do, I'm encouraged when I think of all that I've purged.

I've discarded, one way or another:

  • Bushels of documents; boxes full of bank statements, paid bills, insurance papers for vehicles we haven't owned in years. Tax return from 1983. And every year since then, I'm sure.
  • 20-year-old towels. I kept the ones that are only 14 years old. It's process, give me a break. Plus, we wouldn't have anything left to dry off with unless I used my son's college towels. Washcloths, I'm ruthless. Towels--old towels never die, they just move to the rag box.
  • Outdated computer programs
  • 13-year old T-shirt paint
  • Half-empty spray paint cans, over 10 years old
  • Two plastic containers without lids. And 20 lids without containers.
  • Bathroom cleaners with 2 drops left in them
  • Over the counter medicine that expired in 2005
  • A prescription bottle with pills in it that was filled in 1998

I gave away:

  • Our old computer, minus the hard drive, to someone who's computer is even older and is glad to get it to rebuild
  • At least 30 books
  • Miscellaneous crafts materials that I haven't touched in years
  • A set of fake leather suitcases
  • Printer ink from our old printer that broke, to someone who has the same model
  • Atari game system and games, bought at a garage sale years ago, that still works as far as I know

And my favorite giveaway--a box of miscellaneous "pretties" that were just not "me" anymore. I wasn't sure what to do with some of these things--there was nothing wrong with any of them, they were perfectly good, I just didn't want or need them anymore. I didn't want to just throw them away; but who in the world could I give them to? I decided to start a special box, and once it got full, just drop it off at Goodwill or someplace similar. As it ended up, I showed it to the friend who got some of the other things from me, and told her to take it to see if any of the "girls" in her life--daughter, daughter-in-law, grand daughter, would like any of it. She ended up letting her grandbabies "shop the box" for things to give their mammas for Mother's Day. They were all tickled pink, babies and mammas alike! She was amazed at how well those kids knew the likes and dislikes and personalities of their mammas--even at preschool ages. (Her granddaughter went straight for the jewelry; her grandson, the "smell good") I was thrilled beyond measure that my little box of discarded items brought so much fun to someone else.

I still have a long way to go feel like my home epitomizes the dwelling of a virtuous woman. But I'm making headway.

Until next time...

Philippians 3:14 Friday, May 8

Time for today's weekly update on setting and "pressing on" toward our goals. I've had a busy, productive week in many ways, thanks largely to my husband. He amazes me. He doesn't get to come home as often as I do, but when he's here, he works on home projects the whole time. Our "home" home is an older house, and there are always repair and maintenance items that need to be done. He usually runs out of time before he runs out of tasks.

The differences between us is readily apparent on a week like this one, where we're both home and both working on our respective projects. I'm a thinker, he's a doer. I think about what needs to be done, plan, try to decide what is the absolute best way to organize and place every item related to the task. I rely on him for inspiration--how can I not do something simple when he's doing so much? But practical help as well--not only do I rely on him for most of the heavy lifting, moving things around, and reaching those hard-to-reach places; but he encourages me to keep at it, one small step at a time, when I get overwhelmed my the sheer amount of stuff that needs to be sorted and tended to.

So how have I done on my weekly goals that I set?

  1. I've managed meals pretty well this week. We've gone through a lot of groceries this week, because we're all here, all day. Some days it seems we barely get through with one meal when it's time to start at least thinking about the next, but we've definitely not gone hungry.

  2. Morning routine, done most days.

  3. I've lost track of the number of hours I've spent in the front bedroom (by faith I'm not calling it the junk room anymore!) I've cleaned out papers and documents from years of accumulation and careful saving. At some point you just have to let go. My filing is on hold until I can get a business grade filing cabinet; the old household-grade-from-the-discount-store just won't do. Holiday items are repacked and ready to be taken to the shed. I've culled out at least 10 books so far, and will finish pulling out at least 15 more by the end of the day.

  4. Chest of drawers, not done yet.

  5. Books not yet sorted.

  6. I have taken some, but not all, of the donation items to their respective destinations. Some are loaded ready for delivery, the others should be finished today.

  7. I "read-at" a book, but I still didn't take the time out to really read one front-to-back.

  8. Ate my fruit and yogurt about half the time.

  9. Read my Bible, but not daily

  10. Continued prayer journal.

We have through this weekend to get everything done and get ready for our trek back to Georgia. Due to some scheduling issues, I'll be coming back to smalltown sooner than we'd expected--I'll only be spending about 10-12 days in Georgia before I'll be Louisiana bound again; this time for about two weeks. So while I'm trying to wrap up my projects, I'm figuring out my strategy for next time so I can complete the things that I don't get done this time.

In some respects I feel guilty that I didn't accomplish some of my seemingly simple goals. But I think I grossly underestimated the time factor involved in clearing out a decade, sometimes more, of accumulated trash and treasure.

My goals for now are short-term in nature:

  • Finish purging books
  • Dust and straighten the bookcases
  • Finish my bedroom clean-up--I think I can get that done in an hour or two.
  • Pack for the Georgia trip

Once we get back to home-away-from-home in Georgia, my goals are:

  • Unpack
  • Get my daily routine going
  • Catch up my blogging and email
  • Do some advance posts to help with the time I'll be back in smalltown on a slow internet connection

And that's all for me for now!

This Little Light of Mine

  • She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
  • She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night

A few years ago, my mother made me a cute little Christmas potpourri thingy--filled with Christmas potpourri and a short string of lights, with a cute little perky Christmas ribbon tied around the neck of the container. You could plug in the lights, and the small amount of heat would disperse the smell of the potpourri into the room. I used mine in my kitchen, and over the years it had gotten a little bedraggled. The ribbon was no longer perky, the potpourri really didn't smell anymore, and the jar stayed mostly dust encrusted and unused.

I shared on my Philppians 3:14 post about how I had been clearing out old crafts materials from my junk-room closet--I came across a couple of half-used bags of potpourri, and decided to re-do my little jar. I removed the Christmas ribbon and potpourri, washed and dried the jar, refolded the lights and filled it with fresh potpourri, plugged it in and Voila! Instant air freshener and pretty thingy for my kitchen!

I'm not much of an air-freshener kind of gal except in extreme cases, and my fragrances of choice run to scents with "fresh" in the name--Fresh Linen, Rainshower Fresh, Fresh Mountain Air--but what I like about this is that it's subtle. I plug it in for just little while after I've cleaned up the kitchen at night--I love walking back in to the kitchen later with the counters clean, the little lights glowing and just a light potpourri scent lingering the air.

It's not much, but it makes me smile when I see it, and it's making me think I could get a little more "crafty" again, even in my old middle age!

What crafty things have you re-purposed lately?

Until next time...

Philippians 3:14 Friday (er, Saturday) 5/2

  • She looketh well to the ways of her household

This week marks the end of one month and the beginning of another, not just on the calendar, but for Philippians 3:14 Fridays, as well.

Several of my weekly goals were met along the way, but I don't think I did so well on the monthly goals. In one sense, while it seems like a failed experiment, it really hasn't been on several levels.

"How can that be?" You may ask. Well, I'll tell you!

Long ago (in a galaxy far, far away!) I used to be a fairly organized person. In recent years...well, who's kidding who, for the last 20 years or so, I find myself on a downward spiral of being less and less organized, of fighting a constant, losing battle to keep up with work, home, church activities, even personal things I used to do for fun--crafts and reading for pleasure, just to name two.

It got even worse instead of better when I started staying home last year--instead of filling my days with the activities I loved and always said I would do "if I had time" I slipped into even worse habits of ennui and drifting through days and weeks without accomplishing much except the most humdrum of necessary activities. Every so often I would surface for air, with all kinds of intentions of starting anew and "this time I'm gonna____________"(fill in the blank--get organized, keep the house cleaner, take a class, you name it).

One of the things that I like about Philippians 3:14 Fridays, is that it helps me to at least put it "out there". Write down all of those little things that I always intend to do but never seem to get around to completing. Set some goals. Realize that the way to achieve those goals is to break them down into manageable pieces. (Joke break--How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time)

If you don't have a particular destination, how will you know if you get there?

So, on to Philippians 3:14 Friday Saturday.

For my weekly goals from last week:

  1. I did trim my hair and give myself a manicure of sorts--no polish, but I clipped and filed and buffed and used cuticle oil;
  2. I cleaned out 85% of the old craft materials--giving some away and throwing some away--I have a few more things to sort and make decisions over;
  3. I did some shredding and trashing of paper items, but not nearly enough;
  4. I accomplished two speaking engagements in one week when one was unexpected rescheduled;
  5. I did my morning routine about half the time.
  6. I didn't get my bedroom finished, but I cleaned out a cabinet and two drawers in my kitchen, plus bathroom vanity underneath the sink.
  7. I found our old Atari and games to donate to the youth center. Goodbye, Space Invaders and Pacman. And yes, there are kids in this era of Xbox and Playstation Whatever that find it fascinating and even fun to play these "old" games!

Monthly goals were not so well done:

Blog goals: I've had internet problems a lot, even the poky old dial-up was pokier than usual, and when I went to town to find Wi-Fi, one of my spots only worked about half the time. In another 10 days or so, I'll be back to high-speed internet and hope to accomplish my blog goals at that time.

Physical: Monitored my blood pressure and sugar fairly regularly; did not lose weight. Better luck next month.

Spiritual: I did not get to the Hallel, but did prepare and give two messages; started my prayer journal; fasted two days

Household: EEK--morning routine, so-so; lets just skip the rest!

Mental: I "read at" a couple of books, but did not read one front to back to completion

New Goals

I'm home in small town rural Louisiana for about 8 more days, so my goals are going to be for now until I leave for the big city.

  1. Feed my family regular, healthful meals
  2. Do my morning routine
  3. Spend 5 hours this week working in the front bedroom/junkroom (broken into multiple days) Finish sorting craft materials, clean desk area and replace printer, get rid of at least 25 books, work on filing system, repack holiday items and put in the shed
  4. Clean out my chest of drawers
  5. Sort books to take back with me
  6. Take donation items to youth center/library/Goodwill
  7. Read one book this week--just for fun
  8. Eat my fruit and yogurt daily
  9. Read my Bible daily
  10. Continue my prayer journal
